じっと見つめていました（ I was staring intently）
むかしむかし、きっちょむさんと言う、とてもゆかいな人がいました。
Once upon a time, there was a very cheerful man named Kicchomu-san.
そのきっちょむさんが、まだ子どもの頃のお話です。
This is a story from when Kicchomu-san was still a child.
ある秋のこと。
One autumn day,
家の人はみんな仕事に出かけるので、きっちょむさんがひとりで留守番をすることになりました。
everyone in the family went out to work, so Kicchomu-san had to stay home alone.
出かける前に、お父さんが言いました。
Before leaving, his father said,
「きっちょむや、カキがもう食べられる。あした木から落とすから、今日は気をつけて見ていてくれ」
“Kicchomu, the persimmons are ready to eat. We’ll pick them tomorrow, so keep an eye on them today.”
「はい。ちゃんと見ています」
“Yes, I’ll watch them carefully,”
きっちょむさんは、元気な声で返事をしました。
Kicchomu-san replied energetically.
でも、食べられるカキがいっぱいあるのに、だまって見ているきっちょむさんではありません。
But Kicchomu-san wasn’t the type to just watch when there were so many ripe persimmons.
お父さんたちの姿が見えなくなると、さっそく村の中を走り回りました。
As soon as his father and the others were out of sight, he started running around the village.
「おーい、うちのカキがもう食べられるぞ。みんな食べに来い」
“Hey, our persimmons are ready to eat. Everyone come and eat!”
これを聞いた村の子どもたちは、大喜びできっちょむさんの家にやってきました。
Hearing this, the village children joyfully came to Kicchomu-san’s house.
そして、長い棒でカキを落とすと、みんなでお腹いっぱい食べてしまったのです。
Using long sticks to knock down the persimmons, they all ate until they were full.
さて、夕方になってお父さんが家に戻ってくると、きっちょむさんは柿の木の下にすわっていました。
In the evening, when his father returned home, Kicchomu-san was sitting under the persimmon tree.
「おまえ、一日中、そうやっていたのか？」
“You’ve been sitting like that all day?”
「はい。だって、気をつけて見ていろと言うから、ジッと柿の木を見ていたんです」
“Yes. You told me to keep an eye on them, so I’ve been watching the persimmon tree.”
「そうか。えらいぞ」
“I see. Well done.”
感心したお父さんが、ふと、柿の木を見上げてみると、カキの実がずいぶんとへっています。
Impressed, his father looked up at the persimmon tree and saw that many of the fruits were gone.
「おや？ カキの実がずいぶんへっているな。これは、誰かが取っていったに違いない。おい、きっちょむ、これはどうしたことだ？」
“Oh? The persimmons are quite reduced. Someone must have taken them. Hey, Kicchomu, what happened here?”
するときっちょむさんは、へいきな顔で言いました。
Kicchomu-san replied with a calm face,
「はい、村の子どもたちが次々と来て、棒を使ってカキの実をもいでいきました。私は言われたとおり、気をつけて見ていたからまちがいありません」
“Yes, the village children came one after another and used sticks to pick the persimmons. I watched carefully as you told me, so there’s no mistake.”
「とほほ。・・・カキ泥棒が来ないよう、気をつけて見ていろと言ったのに」
“Oh dear… I told you to watch to make sure no one stole them.”
お父さんはそう言って、ガックリと肩を落としました。
His father said this and slumped his shoulders in disappointment.
