コウノトリの恩返し（ The Crane’s Gratitude）
むかしむかし、ある村の橋の下に、ほったて小屋で暮らしている母と息子がいました。
Long, long ago, under a bridge in a certain village, there lived a mother and her son in a shack.
息子は毎日、少しばかりの塩を仕入れては、それを売り歩いていました。
Every day, the son would buy a small amount of salt and walk around selling it.
ある年の暮れの事です。
It was the end of the year.
息子が塩を仕入れて町からもどってくると、田んぼで殿さまが仕掛けたかすみアミにコウノトリがかかっていました。
When the son returned from the town after buying salt, he saw a crane caught in a trap set by the lord in the rice field.
「なんと、コウノトリじゃないか。年の暮れだというのに、かわいそうに」
“Oh, it’s a crane. How pitiful, especially at the end of the year.”
息子は、コウノトリをはなしてやりました。
The son released the crane.
そして橋のところまで帰ってきたとき、土手(どて)の石につまずいて、塩をばらまいてしまったのです。
As he returned to the bridge, he stumbled on a stone and scattered the salt.
橋の下からそれを見ていた母親は、
Seeing this from under the bridge, his mother said,
「また、けつまずいたのか。ああ、塩がもったいない。あの石はあぶないから足元に気をつけろって、何度もいっておったのに」
“Did you stumble again? Oh, what a waste of salt. I’ve told you many times to be careful of that dangerous stone.”
と、あきれ顔でいいました。
She said with an exasperated look.
これで、今日は仕事に行けません。
Now, he couldn’t go to work today.
仕事に行けないので食べる物が買えず、母と息子はだまって、お湯ばかり飲んでいました。
Since they couldn’t go to work, they couldn’t buy food, and the mother and son silently drank hot water.
ところがしばらくすると、ほったて小屋へ美しい娘がたずねてきたのです。
But after a while, a beautiful girl came to their shack.
「おや？ あんたみたいな美しい娘さんが、わしら貧乏人(びんぼうにん)に何の用だね？」
“Oh? What business does a beautiful girl like you have with poor people like us?”
母親がたずねると、娘はまじめな顔で、
When the mother asked, the girl, with a serious face, said,
「はい。嫁にしてもらおうと思ってきました」と、いうのです。
“Yes. I have come to be your son’s wife.”
「な、なにをいう。うちには金も食う物もねえ。だから、お前のような娘を嫁にはもらえねえ。わるいが、帰っておくれ」
“What are you saying? We have no money or food. So, we can’t take a girl like you as a bride. I’m sorry, but please go back.”
母親は断りましたが、
The mother refused, but
「お金なら、少しは持っております。お願いですから、嫁にしてください」
The beautiful girl pulled out some money and said,
と、美しい娘は、ふところからお金を出しました。
“I do have some money. Please, let me be your son’s wife.”
「・・・しかし」
“But…”
「お願いです。嫁にしてください」
“Please. Let me be your son’s wife.”
「・・・だけれど」
“But…”
「お願いです。嫁にしてください」
“Please. Let me be your son’s wife.”
「・・・・・・」
“……”
母親は断り切れなくなって、娘を息子の嫁にしました。
The mother couldn’t refuse anymore and accepted the girl as her son’s wife.
すると次の日の朝早く、いかめしい侍(さむらい)たちがやってきました。
The next morning, some stern samurai came.
そして、殿さまが捕らえようとしていたコウノトリを逃がした罪として、十両(じゅうりょう→約七十万円)の罰金(ばっきん)を払わなければ息子の命はないと、きびしく言ってきたのです。
They sternly said that because the son released the crane the lord was trying to catch, he must pay a fine of ten ryō (about 700,000 yen), or his life would be taken.
「お前がコウノトリを逃がしたなんて、知らんかった。なんという事をしたんじゃ。
“I didn’t know you released the crane. What have you done?
十両もの大金は、一生かかっても出来んぞ。ああ、どうしたらいいんじゃ」
A sum of ten ryō is something we can never earn in a lifetime. Oh, what shall we do?”
嫁さんは泣き崩れる母親をなぐさめると、夫にむかっていいました。
The daughter-in-law comforted the crying mother and then said to her husband,
「あなたが何度もつまずいて塩をばらまいた石を、どけてみなされ」
“Try removing the stone you stumbled over many times, causing you to scatter the salt.”
息子はすぐに土手の石のところへ走っていくと、土をほって石をどけてみました。
The son immediately ran to the stone, dug up the soil, and removed the stone.
すると大きな石はふたになっていて、その下には大判小判がいっぱいうまっていたのです。
The big stone served as a lid, and beneath it, there were many gold coins buried.
そのお金で、息子はすぐに罰金を払いました。
With that money, the son promptly paid the fine.
ところが晴れて息子の命がすくわれると、嫁さんは町へ買い物に行くといったまま、姿を消してしまったのです。
However, once the son’s life was saved, the daughter-in-law said she was going to the town to shop but then disappeared.
「あの娘は、お前が助けたコウノトリだったんだな。恩を返しに嫁にきたんだな」
“That girl was the crane you saved. She came to repay your kindness by becoming your wife.”
母と息子は、うなずきあいました。
The mother and son nodded to each other.
こうして大金持ちになったこの親子が、のちに大阪へ出てきて、
Having become rich, this mother and son later went to Osaka,
『難波(なにわ)の大長者(だいちょうじゃ)』
and became known as
と、いわれた大商人、鴻池(こうのいけ)のはじまりになったという事です。
