ぶんぶく茶釜（ Bunbuku Chagama）
むかしむかし、あるところに、貧乏な古道具屋がいました。
Long, long ago, in a certain place, there was a poor antique dealer.
ある日の事、古道具屋は一匹のタヌキが、ワナにかかっているのを見つけました。
One day, the antique dealer found a raccoon dog caught in a trap.
古道具屋はかわいそうに思って、そのタヌキをワナから助けてやりました。
Feeling sorry for the raccoon dog, the antique dealer rescued it from the trap.
次の日の朝、昨日のタヌキが古道具屋の所へやってきて言いました。
The next morning, the raccoon dog from the previous day came to the antique dealer and said,
「昨日は、本当にありがとうございました。お礼に良い事をお教えしましょう。
“Thank you very much for yesterday. As a token of my gratitude, I will tell you something good.
隣村の和尚(おしょう)さんが茶がまを欲しがっていますから、茶がまを持って行けば喜びますよ。
The priest in the neighboring village wants a tea kettle, so if you bring him one, he will be pleased.
わたしが茶がまに化けますから、持って行って売って下さい」
I will transform into a tea kettle, so please take me there and sell me.”
そういうとタヌキは、くるりと宙返りをして、すばらしい金の茶がまに化けました。
With that, the raccoon dog did a somersault and transformed into a splendid golden tea kettle.
さっそく古道具屋が茶がまを持って行くと、
The antique dealer promptly took the tea kettle,
「うーん、これは見事」
“Hmm, this is splendid,”
と、和尚さんはタヌキの化けた茶がまを大変気に入った様子で、とても高い値で買い取ってくれました。
said the priest, who seemed very pleased with the raccoon dog’s transformed tea kettle, and he bought it for a very high price.
さて、新しい茶がまを手に入れた和尚さんは、小坊主に、
Now, having obtained a new tea kettle, the priest told his young apprentice,
「この茶がまを、洗ってきなさい」と、言いました。
“Go and wash this tea kettle.”
「はい」
“Yes.”
小坊主はさっそく、裏の川へ行って茶がまをゴシゴシと洗いました。
The young apprentice promptly went to the river behind and scrubbed the tea kettle.
すると茶がまは、
Then the tea kettle said,
「おい小坊主、もっとやさしく洗ってくれ、尻が痛くてたまらん」と、しゃべったのです。
“Hey, young apprentice, wash more gently, my bottom hurts terribly.”
「うひゃー、茶がまがしゃべった！！」
“Yikes, the tea kettle talked!!”
びっくりした小坊主は、あわてて和尚さんにこの事を話しましたが、和尚さんは信じてくれません。
The surprised young apprentice hurriedly told the priest about this, but the priest didn’t believe him.
「なにを馬鹿な。茶がまがしゃべるはずなかろう」
“Don’t be ridiculous. A tea kettle can’t talk.”
「でも、本当なんです」
“But it’s true.”
「まあ良い。それより、次はお湯をわかしておくれ」
“Well, never mind. Now, go and boil some water.”
そこで小坊主は言われるままに、タヌキの化けた茶がまに水を入れて火にかけました。
So the young apprentice did as he was told, filled the transformed tea kettle with water, and put it on the fire.
すると茶がまに化けたタヌキは、びっくりです。
The raccoon dog, transformed into the tea kettle, was shocked.
「あちちちち！ お尻に火がついた！」
“Ouch, ouch, ouch! My bottom is on fire!”
タヌキは一目散に、山へ逃げていきました。
The raccoon dog ran straight to the mountains.
その夜、タヌキはまた、古道具屋の家にやってきて言いました。
That night, the raccoon dog came back to the antique dealer’s house and said,
「二人で町へ行きましょう。私がつなわたりをしますから、人を集めて下さいな」
“Let’s go to the town together. I’ll do a tightrope walk, so gather some people.”
次の日、古道具屋とタヌキは町へ出かけて、芝居屋を貸し切りました。
The next day, the antique dealer and the raccoon dog went to town and rented a theater.
「さあさあ、世にも珍しい、タヌキのつなわたりだよ」
“Come one, come all, see the rare sight of a raccoon dog walking a tightrope!”
入り口で古道具屋が大声で言うと、タヌキはつなの上を器用に渡りながら、腹づつみを打ったり歌ったりします。
At the entrance, the antique dealer shouted loudly, and the raccoon dog skillfully walked the tightrope, drumming on his belly and singing.
「これはめずらしい。なんて面白いんだろう」
“This is rare. How entertaining!”
タヌキのつなわたりは大評判となり、毎日押すな押すなの大にぎわいです。
The raccoon dog’s tightrope act became very popular, drawing large crowds every day.
こうして古道具屋は、タヌキのお陰で大金持ちになったという事です。
And so, thanks to the raccoon dog, the antique dealer became very wealthy.
