ニワトリのおなら（ The Chicken’s）
むかしむかし、ある家に、一羽のニワトリがいました。
Once upon a time, there was a chicken in a certain house.
ある日のこと。
One day,
ニワトリが庭の木にとまって鳴いていると、その下をキツネが一匹通りました。
As the chicken perched on the tree in the garden, a fox passed by underneath.
キツネはニワトリを見ると、何とか取って食いたいと思い
Seeing the chicken, the fox wanted to catch and eat it.
「ニワトリさん、とてもいい声ですね。でも、もっと下で鳴けばもっといい声が出ますよ」
“Mr. Chicken, you have a very nice voice. But if you sing from lower down, your voice will sound even better.”
キツネの言葉に、ニワトリは下の枝に飛び移って鳴きました。
At the fox’s words, the chicken flew down to a lower branch.
するとキツネは
Then the fox said,
「ニワトリさん、前よりもずいぶんいい声になりました。でももう一つ下がらないと」
“Mr. Chicken, your voice has improved a lot from before. But you need to go down one more branch.”
ニワトリは喜んで、もう一つ下の枝にとまって鳴きました。
Delighted, the chicken landed on one more lower branch.
ところが、そこはキツネの頭のすぐ上だったので、ニワトリはたちまちキツネにつかまってしまいました。
However, it was right above the fox’s head, so the chicken was immediately caught by the fox.
「バカなニワトリさん。では、いただきます」
“Silly Mr. Chicken. Well then, I’ll have you for dinner.”
大きな口をあけるキツネに、ニワトリは慌てて言いました。
Seeing the fox open its big mouth, the chicken panicked and said,
「待ってくださいキツネさん。実は、おらの家でも今夜おらを食うと言っていたから、戦う武器として針を一本盗んでおいたんだ。しっぽのところに隠してあるから、おらを食うんだったらその針を抜いてからのほうがいいよ」
“Wait, Mr. Fox! Actually, my family had planned to eat me tonight, so I stole a needle to use as a weapon. It’s hidden in my tail, so if you’re going to eat me, it’s better to remove the needle first.”
「そうか、それはご親切に」
“I see, that’s considerate of you.”
キツネは早速、しっぽのまわりをさがしてみました。
The fox immediately searched around the tail.
すると、ニワトリはキツネの顔めがけておならをあびせました。
Suddenly, the chicken farted toward the fox’s face.
キツネがビックリして手を離した隙に、ニワトリは木の上に逃げてしまいました。
Surprised, the fox let go, giving the chicken a chance to escape to the top of the tree.
