カニの相撲（ Crab sumo wrestling）
天下人となった秀吉は、大阪城と言う大きなお城に住んでいました。
When Hideyoshi became the ruler of the nation, he lived in a large castle called Osaka Castle.
大阪城にはきれいな池があって、そこには金で作ったカニが置いてありました。
In Osaka Castle, there was a beautiful pond where crabs made of gold were placed.
それも、一匹や二匹ではありません。
And it wasn’t just one or two.
大きいのやら小さいのやら、何百匹ものカニがキラキラと光り輝いていました。
There were hundreds of crabs, large and small, shining brilliantly.
ところが秀吉は今度京都に新しい城を作ったので、そちらに引っ越す事にしたのです。
However, Hideyoshi built a new castle in Kyoto and decided to move there.
そこで秀吉は、この池の金のカニを家来たちに分けてやる事にしました。
So, Hideyoshi decided to distribute the gold crabs from the pond to his retainers.
「お前たちに金のカニを分けてやるが、誰にでもやるのではない。
“I will give you the gold crabs, but not to just anyone.
何故、カニが欲しいのか。カニを、どう言う事に使うのか。その訳を言うがよい。
Why do you want the crabs? What will you use them for? Tell me your reasons.
『それなら、カニをやってもよい』と、思う様な訳を言った者にだけ、分けてやる事にしよう」
Only those who give a reason that makes me think, ‘In that case, you can have the crabs,’ will receive them.”
家来たちはみんなは首をひねって、何と言えば、あのカニをもらえるだろうかと考えました。
All the retainers scratched their heads, wondering what to say to get those crabs.
そのうち、一人が進み出て言いました。
After a while, one stepped forward and said,
「殿さま。わたくしは、床の間の飾り物にしたいと思います。ぜひ、一匹下さいませ」
“My lord, I would like to use it as a decoration in the alcove. Please give me one.”
「おお、床の間の飾りか。それなら良かろう。お前には大きいのを一匹つかわそう」
“Oh, a decoration in the alcove. That’s fine. I will give you a large one.”
「はい。ありがとうございます」
“Yes. Thank you very much.”
その家来は大きいカニを一匹もらって、得意そうな顔をしました。
The retainer received a large crab and looked pleased.
すると、もう一人の家来が言いました。
Then, another retainer said,
「わたくしは、書が趣味です。ですから紙を押さえる文鎮にしたいと思います」
“I enjoy writing, so I would like to use it as a paperweight.”
「そうかそうか。文鎮なら良かろう。ただ、文鎮では大きすぎては邪魔だから、小さいのを一匹つかわそう」
“Alright, a paperweight is fine. But a large one would be cumbersome, so I’ll give you a small one.”
「はい。ありがとうございます」
“Yes. Thank you very much.”
その家来は小さいカニを一匹もらって、少し残念そうな顔をしました。
The retainer received a small crab and looked a bit disappointed.
それからみんなは、次々と色々な事を言ってカニをもらいました。
After that, everyone said various things one after another to get a crab.
「わたくしは、子どもや孫の代まで、いいえ、もっと先まで伝えて、家の守り神にしたいと存じます」
“I want to pass it down to my children and grandchildren, no, even further, as a household guardian.”
「わたくしは、・・・」
“I…”
「わたくしは、・・・」
“I…”
ところが家来の一人の曽呂利さんだけは、みんなの様子を黙って見ているだけで、何も言いません。
However, only Sorori, one of the retainers, silently watched everyone’s behavior without saying anything.
「これ、曽呂利。お前はさっきから何も言わないが、カニが欲しくないのか？」
“Hey, Sorori. You haven’t said anything, don’t you want a crab?”
秀吉が尋ねると、曽呂利はつるりと顔をなでて、
When Hideyoshi asked, Sorori smoothly stroked his face and said,
「いえいえ、もちろん、わたくしも頂きとうございます。しかし」
“No, no, of course, I would like to receive one too. However…”
「しかし、どうした？」
“But what?”
「わたくしの使い方は、一匹では足りませんので」
“The way I want to use them, one is not enough.”
「何？一匹では足りぬと。ふむ、一体何に使うのじゃ？」
“What? One is not enough? Hmm, what will you use them for?”
「はい。わたくしは勇ましい事が大好きでございますので、あのカニに相撲を取らせてみたいのでございます」
“Yes. I love brave things, so I would like to have the crabs sumo wrestle.”
「ほう、相撲か。なるほど考えたな。よし、では二匹をつかわそう」
“Oh, sumo wrestling. That’s an interesting idea. Alright, I’ll give you two.”
「いえいえ、相撲はやはり東と西に分けて、横綱、大関、小結、幕下と、それぞれいなければ面白くありません」
“No, no, for sumo, it’s best to have East and West, with Yokozuna, Ozeki, Komusubi, and lower ranks, otherwise it’s not interesting.”
「おおっ、確かにそれもそうじゃ。それでは曽呂利よ、残りのカニはみんなそちにやろう。持っていけ」
“Oh, indeed, that makes sense. Then Sorori, I will give you all the remaining crabs. Take them.”
「ありがとうございます」
“Thank you very much.”
曽呂利さんはニコニコ顔で、残りのカニを全部持って行ってしまいました。
Sorori took all the remaining crabs with a smile.
その為に、カニをもらいそこなった家来たちは、
Because of this, the retainers who didn’t get any crabs said,
「曽呂利め、相撲とは考えたな。それならわしは、武者合戦とでも言えば良かったわ」
“Sorori thought of sumo wrestling. In that case, I should have said a warrior battle.”
と、悔しがったそうです。
They regretted it.
