鏡の中の親父（ The Father in the Mirror）
むかしむかし、田舎では、カガミという物をほとんど知らなかったころの話です。
Once upon a time, in the countryside, there was a time when people hardly knew about mirrors.
ある若夫婦が、夫の父親と三人で仲良くくらしていました。
A young couple lived happily together with the husband’s father.
ところがある日の事、父親は急な病で死んでしまったのです。
But one day, the father suddenly died of an illness.
大好きな父親に死なれた息子は、毎日毎日、涙にくれていました。
The son, who loved his father dearly, was crying every day.
さて、ある日の事、その息子は気ばらしにと、江戸の町へ出かけました。
One day, to cheer himself up, the son went to the town of Edo.
そして町中をぶらぶらと歩いていると、店先においてあったカガミがピカリと光ります。
As he was wandering around the town, a mirror in a shop window caught his eye with a flash.
「おや？ 今のは何だろう？」
“Oh? What was that just now?”
不思議に思った息子は、ピカッと光ったカガミをのぞいてみてびっくり。
Curious, the son looked into the shining mirror and was surprised.
「死んだ親父に、こんなところで会えるとは！」
“To think I could meet my dead father in a place like this!”
カガミにうつった自分の顔を父親と勘違いした息子は、なけなしのお金をはたいて、そのカガミを買いました。
Mistaking his own reflection in the mirror for his father, the son spent his last bit of money to buy the mirror.
そしてそれを大事にしまうと、ひまさえあればのぞき込んでいました。
He treasured it and looked into it whenever he had a chance.
そんな夫の行動を不思議に思った女房は、夫が昼寝をしているすきに、隠してあるカガミをこっそりのぞきこみました。
His wife’s curiosity was piqued by her husband’s behavior, so while he was napping, she secretly looked into the hidden mirror.
するとカガミの中には、とうぜん、女房の顔がうつります。
Of course, her face was reflected in the mirror.
しかしそれを見た女房は、血相を変えて怒りました。
But when she saw it, she was furious.
「なんとまあ！ こんなところにおなごをかくしておるとは、それもあんなブサイクなおなごを！」
“How dare you hide a woman here, and such an ugly woman at that!”
腹を立てた女房は、ガシャーン！ と、大切なカガミをこわしてしまいました。
Angry, she smashed the precious mirror with a crash!
「さあ、ブサイク女。よくもあたしからあの人をうばいやがって、はやく出てこい！」
“Come out, you ugly woman! How dare you steal my husband from me!”
女房はこわれたカガミをひっくり返してみましたが、もちろん、だれも出てはきません。
The wife turned over the broken mirror, but of course, no one came out.
「ちくしょう。逃げたな！」
“Damn it. She escaped!”
女房は気持ちよさそうに昼寝をしていた夫をたたき起こすと、こわい顔でいいました。
She angrily woke up her husband, who was napping peacefully, and said with a scary face,
「あんた！ わたしにだまって、あんな所へおなごをかくしておるとは、どういうこと！」
“How could you hide a woman there without telling me!”
「はあ？ おなご？ なにを一体・・・、ああっ！ なんという事をしてくれた。あれにはわしの親父が入っておったのに！」
“Huh? A woman? What are you talking about… Ah! What have you done? My father was in that!”
「うそおっしゃい。ブサイクなおなごじゃったよ」
“You’re lying. It was an ugly woman.”
「なにをいう。わしの親父だ！」
“What are you talking about? It was my father!”
そんなわけで、夫婦の大げんかが始まりました。
And so, a big argument started between the couple.
ちょうどそこへ、村一番の物知りの庄屋さんが近くを通りかかりました。
Just then, the village’s most knowledgeable man, the village headman, happened to pass by.
「まあまあ、なにをけんかしておる。落ち着いて、わしに事情を話してみろ」
“Now, now, why are you two fighting? Calm down and tell me what’s going on.”
そして二人の話を聞いた庄屋さんは、腹を抱えて大笑いです。
After hearing their story, the headman burst into laughter.
「あははははっ。何じゃ、そんな事か。それはな、カガミといって、自分の姿がうつる物じゃ。亭主が見た親父さんと言うのは、自分の顔じゃ。そして女房が見たおなごも、自分の顔じゃ」
“Hahaha! Is that all? That’s called a mirror. It reflects your own image. The father your husband saw was his own face. And the woman you saw was your own face.”
庄屋さんの説明に、夫も女房も大笑いしました。
The headman’s explanation made both the husband and wife burst into laughter.
「なるほど、親父にしては、若いと思った」
“I see, I thought my father looked young.”
「あたしも、どうりで、美人なおなごと思った」
“I also thought, no wonder, that she was a beautiful woman.”
