百姓じいさんとテング（The Farmer and the Tengu）
むかしむかし、百姓（ひゃくしょう）のおじいさんがウマをつれて、うたいながら山道をあるいていました。
Once upon a time, an old farmer was walking along a mountain path with his horse, singing.
♪こころたのしや ♪山坂ゆけば ♪ウマのすずまでこだまする ♪エーイソラ ホイホイ
♪My heart is joyful ♪As I walk along the mountain path ♪Even the horse’s bell echoes ♪Ee-sora hoi hoi
すると向こうの方から、ズシンズシンと大きな足音をたてながら、大テングがやってきました。
Then, from afar, a great tengu approached, making loud thudding footsteps.
その大テングの鼻ときたら、おじいさんの腕ほど長くて大きく、顔ときたら、ぬりたての神社のとりいより、まっ赤です。
The great tengu’s nose was as long and big as the old man’s arm, and its face was as red as a freshly painted shrine gate.
大テングとおじいさんは、細い山道でぶつかりました。
The great tengu and the old man met on the narrow mountain path.
「こら、じいさま。道をよけろっ！」
“Hey, old man. Move out of the way!”
大きな声の大テングに、おじいさんは負けじと、
The old man, not intimidated by the tengu’s loud voice, replied,
「よけろというたって、ここはおらが道じゃ。おまけに、おらこのとうり、ウマとふたり連れじゃ。おまえがよけろ」
“This is my path, and as you can see, I have my horse with me. You move aside.”
大テングをにらみつけます。
He glared at the great tengu.
「ヒヒ、ヒヒーン！」
“Hihi, hihiin!” (the horse neighed in support of the old man)
ウマもないて、おじいさんの応援です。
The horse neighed, supporting the old man.
「このじじいめ。つべこべぬかすと、つまんで食うてしまうぞー！」
“You old man. If you keep whining, I’ll pinch and eat you!”
「そうかい。おらもこの年、食われて死ぬのはこわくないが、おまえに食われる前に、ひとつ見たいもんがあるんじゃ」
“Is that so? I’m not afraid of dying at my age, but before you eat me, there’s something I’d like to see.”
「なんじゃい、それは」
“What is it?”
「テングは、誰でも術というもんを使うそうじゃが、ほんとうかいのう」
“They say tengu can use magic. Is that true?”
「ワハハハハッ。わしはこれでも、テングの頭じゃ。術ぐらい使えんでなんとする」
“Ha ha ha! I am the head tengu. Of course, I can use magic.”
「そうかい。テングいうもんは、どこのテングでも、天まで大きゅうなれるというが、おまえさまは、なれるかね」
“Is that so? They say any tengu can grow as tall as the sky. Can you do that?”
「天まで大きゅうなる。そんなことができんで、どうなる」
“Grow as tall as the sky? If I can’t do that, what good am I?”
「そうかのう。じゃあ、おらが食われる前に、ちょっくら見せてもらおうか。あの世への話のたねというもんじゃ」
“Is that so? Then show me before you eat me. It will be something to talk about in the afterlife.”
「よし。よう見とれっ」
“Alright. Watch closely.”
そこで大テングは、鼻を上にむけてゴォーーッと、息をすいこみました。
The great tengu then pointed his nose upward and inhaled deeply.
すると、グングングングン、大テングの背が伸びて、とうとう雲をつきぬけてしまいました。
Then, the great tengu grew taller and taller until he pierced through the clouds.
そこでおじいさんはニヤリと笑い、いかにも感心したようにいいました。
The old man smiled wryly and said, as if impressed,
「テング様、テング様。ようわかったから、もとにもどってくだされ」
“Tengu, tengu. I understand now, so please return to your original size.”
すると大テングは、シューッと息をはいて、もとの大きさにもどりました。
The great tengu exhaled and returned to his original size.
「どうじゃ、じいさま。ビックリしたろう。さあ、食うてやるか」
“Well, old man. Surprised? Now, shall I eat you?”
と、手をのばす大テングに、おじいさんは、カラカラと笑って、
The great tengu reached out, but the old man laughed heartily and said,
「そんなこと言うても、テング様が天まで大きゅうなるのは、どこのテング様でもやることでねえか。
“Even if you say that, growing as tall as the sky is something any tengu can do.
おまえ様は、さっきテングの頭と言うたが、いくら頭でも、小そうなるこたぁできまい」
You said you are the head tengu, but no matter how great you are, you can’t become small, can you?”
「なにっ。わしは日本一のテングじゃ。大きゅうばかりなれて、小そうはなれん、そんなケチなテングじゃないわい。見とれ。いま見せてやるわ」
“What? I am the greatest tengu in Japan. Not only can I grow big, but I can also become small. I’m not a petty tengu. Watch, I’ll show you now.”
大テングはそう言うて、フーッと息をはき出しました。
The great tengu said this and exhaled.
するとドンドン小さくなっていって、おじいさんの小指ほどになってしまいました。
Then he became smaller and smaller until he was about the size of the old man’s little finger.
そこでおじいさんは、ヒョイと大テングを手のひらにのせて、
The old man picked up the great tengu and placed him on his palm.
「よう。もっと小さく、もっと小さく。そうそう」
“Alright. Smaller, smaller. Just like that.”
ついに大テングは、豆つぶのように小さくなってしまいました。
Eventually, the great tengu became as small as a bean.
「かかったな」
“Got you.”
おじいさんは大テングをつまむと、ポイと口の中へほうり込んで、ゴクンと飲みこんでしまいました。
The old man pinched the great tengu, tossed him into his mouth, and swallowed him down.
そして、
And then,
♪そよらそよらと ♪たてがみなでて ♪ふくや春風里までも ♪エーソラ ホイホイ
♪Swaying and swaying ♪Brushing the mane ♪Spring breeze blowing all the way to the village ♪Ee-sora hoi hoi
うたいながらウマをひいて、家の方へ帰って行きました。
