山の神がくれたお嫁さん（The Bride Given by the Mountain Deity）

むかしむかし、あるところに、病気の母親と親孝行の息子がいました。
Once upon a time, in a certain place, there lived a sick mother and her devoted son.

ある日息子が山で働いていると、やぶの中からしらがの鬼ババが出てきました。
One day, while the son was working in the mountains, an old white-haired ogress emerged from the bushes.

そして、息子のお弁当をのぞいていいました。
She looked into the son’s lunchbox and said,

「病気の母親にも、そんなにそまつな飯を食わせているのか？」
“Are you feeding your sick mother such a meager meal as well?”

「母親には、ちゃんと白いご飯を食べさせているよ」
“I feed my mother proper white rice,” the son replied.

息子が答えると、鬼ババは、
When the son answered, the ogress said,

「そうか、そうか。ではあと十日したら、お前の家に行くから、白いご飯をたいておけ」
“Is that so? Then, in ten days, I will come to your house, so prepare white rice.”

と、言って、やぶの中に消えてしまいました。
Saying this, she disappeared into the bushes.

十日たって、息子が白いご飯をたいて待っていると、外からドスンときれいな箱が落ちてきました。
Ten days later, as the son was waiting with the white rice prepared, a beautiful box fell from outside with a thud.

箱をあけてみると、中にはきれいな娘が入っていて、
When he opened the box, inside was a beautiful girl who said,

「山の鬼ババに、ここの嫁になれと言われました」
“The mountain ogress told me to become a bride here.”

と、言うのです。
She said this.

息子はよろこんで、娘をお嫁さんにしました。
The son was delighted and made the girl his bride.

お嫁さんは、となり村の長者(ちょうじゃ)の娘でした。
The bride was the daughter of a wealthy man from the neighboring village.

話しを聞いた長者も、親孝行で心のやさしい息子が好きになってたくさんのお金をわたしてやりました。
Upon hearing the story, the wealthy man also grew fond of the dutiful and kind-hearted son and gave him a lot of money.

それで三人は、しあわせにくらしました。
And so the three of them lived happily.

あの鬼ババは、本当は山の神さまだったのです。
That ogress was actually a mountain deity.
