地獄の暴れ者（Hell Raiser）
むかしむかしある町に一人の医者がおりましたが、人の病をなおすどころか自分が病にかかって死んでしまいました。
Once upon a time, in a certain town, there was a doctor. However, far from curing others’ illnesses, he himself fell ill and died.
死んだ人は三途の川をわたりあの世へいくのですが、よい行いをした人は極楽に、悪い行いをした人は地獄に行くのです。
The deceased crossed the Sanzu River to reach the afterlife, where those who did good deeds went to paradise, while those who did evil went to hell.
そして極楽行きか地獄行きかは、えんま大王が決めるのでした。
And whether one went to paradise or hell was decided by Enma Daio.
医者はえんま大王にいいました。
The doctor pleaded to Enma Daio, saying,
「大王さま、わたくしめは医者でございます。生前は人々のお役にたったのでございます。どうぞ、極楽へやってくださいませ」
“Great King, I was a doctor in my lifetime, serving people. Please send me to paradise.”
「こら！うそつきめ。お前はにせ医者で、あくどくもうけおったではないか」
“You lie! You’re a fake doctor who profited deceitfully!”
医者は鬼につまみあげられ、ポイッとほうりなげられてしまいました。
The doctor was seized by demons and tossed aside.
「どうせ地獄行きじゃあ。だれか、道づれが来るのを待とう」
“Well, it seems I’m bound for hell. I’ll wait for someone to accompany me.”
さて、次にえんま大王のところへきたのは山ぶしでした。
Next to come before Enma Daio was a mountain priest.
「拙者は人助けの山ぶしというて、世間のわざわいをとりのぞきもうした。まちがいなく、極楽行きでしょうな」
“I am a mountain priest who relieved the world’s sufferings. Undoubtedly, I’m bound for paradise.”
「嘘をつくでない！おまえは神仏のたたりじゃというて、なんでもない人々から金をまきあげたじゃろ！」
“You lie! You took advantage of people’s faith in gods and buddhas to extort money from them!”
山ぶしも、ポイッとほうりなげられました。
The mountain priest was also thrown aside.
「やあ、あんさんも地獄行きで？これで二人になったが、もう一人いれば心強いなあ」
“Ah, you’re headed for hell too? With two of us now, it’s a bit comforting, isn’t it?”
「どうせ地獄行きじゃ。あわてる事はない。もう一人来るまで待とう」
“We’re bound for hell anyway. Let’s wait until one more person comes.”
さて次にあらわれたのは、かじ屋のおやじです。
Next to appear was a carpenter.
「大王さま、おらは百姓のカマやクワをたくさん作って人助けしました。極楽行きでしょう」
“Great King, I made many sickles and hoes for peasants, aiding them. Surely, I’m bound for paradise.”
「お前は鉄にまぜものをして、なまくら道具を売ったな！」
“You mixed impurities with iron and sold shoddy tools!”
かじ屋もポイッとほうりなげられ地獄への道までふっとんでくると、医者と山ぶしがニコニコ顔でむかえました。
The carpenter too was thrown aside and flew toward the path to hell, where the doctor and the mountain priest were waiting with smiles on their faces.
「これで三人」
“With three of us now.”
「では、ぼちぼちまいりましょうか」
“Well then, shall we go?”
そんなわけで三人はつれだって地獄の入り口、地獄門につきました。
Thus, the three of them arrived at the entrance to hell, the Hell Gate.
門番の鬼がおそろしい顔で言いました。
The demon gatekeeper said menacingly,
「ほれ！さっさと入らんか。そしてあの山を登っていくんだ」
“Hurry up and enter, then climb that mountain over there.”
三人が見るとなんとそれは、するどい刃物がズラリとならんだつるぎの山でした。
They saw a mountain lined with sharp swords.
「あんな山を登ったら、足がさけちまうよ」
“If we climb that mountain, our feet will be cut off!”
「ど、どうしよう」
“What should we do?”
医者と山ぶしがおろおろしていると、かじ屋がニッコリ。
While the doctor and the mountain priest were in distress, the carpenter smiled.
「ここは、おいらにまかしとけ」
“Leave this to me.”
なにをするのかと思えばとりだしたペンチの様な道具で、ポキポキとつるぎをへし折り火をおこして、それをうちなおしました。
He took out tools resembling pliers, snapped the swords, made a fire, and forged them again.
「そら出来た。鉄のわらじだ。これをはいて歩けば大丈夫」
“There, iron clogs. With these, we’ll be fine.”
三人は鉄のわらじをはいて、つるぎの山へのぼっていきました。
The three of them put on the iron clogs and climbed the mountain of swords.
すると、つるぎはおもしろいように折れてしまいます。
To their surprise, the swords broke amusingly.
「こりゃあすごい！後ろから来る者のために、道をつくっておこう」
“This is amazing! Let’s make a path for those coming behind us.”
「それそれ、どんどん、折れ折れ」
“Indeed, keep breaking them.”
たまげたのは、鬼たちです。
The demons were astonished.
「なんだ、あいつら！」
“What are they doing?”
「た、たいへんだ！大王さまに知らせねば」
“We need to inform the Great King!”
それを聞いたえんま大王は、怒ったのなんの。
Hearing this, Enma Daio was furious.
「つるぎの山に道を作っただと？馬鹿者！だまって見とるやつがあるか！さっさと捕まえて、カマへほうりこめ。カマゆでじゃ～！」
“They made a path on the mountain of swords? Fools! Is anyone silently watching? Seize them and throw them into the furnace! Stoke it up!”
たちまち三人はつかまって、大きなカマの中にほうりこまれました。
Instantly, the three were caught and thrown into a large cauldron.
鬼たちは、下からドンドンと火をたきます。
The demons stoked the fire from below.
「あちっ、こりゃいかん！」
“Ouch, this is unbearable!”
「もうだめじゃ！」
“It’s hopeless!”
すると今度は、山ぶしが
Then, this time, the mountain priest said,
「ここは、わたしに任せなされ。自慢の法力を見せてくれる」
“Leave this to me. I’ll show you my miraculous powers.”
と、呪文をとなえました。
He chanted a spell.
「ぬるま湯になれ、ぬるま湯になれ・・・」
“Turn into lukewarm water, turn into lukewarm water…”
すると不思議な事に、お湯はちょうどいい湯かげんになりました。
Miraculously, the water became just the right temperature.
「おぬしの術は、たいしたもんじゃ」
“Your magic is impressive.”
「こんな立派な山ぶしどんを地獄に送るなんて、えんまも目がないのう」
“To send such splendid mountain priests to hell, Enma is truly merciless.”
「それにしても、いい湯じゃ」
“Nevertheless, this is good water.”
「お～い、そこの鬼達。手ぬぐいをかしてくれんか。体を洗いたいんじゃ」
“Hey, you demons over there, could you lend us a towel? We want to wash ourselves.”
三人はすっかりいい気分で、うかれて歌まで歌いだすしまつ。
The three of them sang and laughed joyfully.
さて、怒りくるったえんま大王は
Now, the enraged Enma Daio,
「あいつら、地獄をバカにしおって！ゆるせん！ゆるせん！わしがじきじきにせいばいしてくれるわ！」
“They’re mocking hell! Unforgivable! I’ll deal with them myself!”
えんま大王は大きな手で三人をひとつかみにすると、ポイッと口の中へほうりこんでしまいました。
With his huge hands, he grabbed the three and threw them into his mouth.
三人は、えんま大王の腹の中に落ちていきました。
They fell into his belly.
「うむ、さすがはえんま大王の腹の中、なかなか広いわい」
“Ah, as expected of Enma Daio’s belly, it’s quite spacious.”
でも、おもしろがっている場合ではありません。
However, it was no time for amusement.
「あっ、なんだか体がムズムズしてきた」
“Oh, my body feels strange.”
「大変じゃ、体かとけてきた！」
“It’s melting!”
「今度こそ、もうだめじゃ！」
“This time, it’s really over!”
山ぶしとかじ屋は泣き出しましたが、医者は落ち着いたもので、
While the mountain priest and the carpenter cried, the doctor remained composed, saying,
「心配するな。今、体のとけぬ薬を作ったで、飲んでみなされ」
“Don’t worry. I’ve made a potion that can solidify our bodies. Try drinking it.”
その薬を飲むと、たちまち体は元通りになりました。
After drinking the potion, their bodies returned to normal immediately.
三人は大喜びで、えんま大王の腹の中を探検です。
The three rejoiced and explored Enma Daio’s belly.
「医者どん、これは何だ？」
“Doctor, what’s this?”
「そりゃ、笑いのひもじゃよ」
“Oh, that’s the string of laughter.”
医者がその笑いのひもをひっぱると、えんま大王は急に笑いだしました。
When the doctor pulled the string of laughter, Enma Daio suddenly burst into laughter.
今度は、泣きのひもをひっぱると、
Next, when they pulled the string of tears,
「悲しいよう」
“It’s sorrowful.”
と、涙が出ます。
tears flowed.
わけもなく笑ったり泣いたりするえんま大王に、鬼たちは気味悪そうに顔を見合わせました。
The demons exchanged glances, puzzled by Enma Daio’s sudden laughter and tears.
「こりゃあ、おもしろい」
“This is interesting.”
腹の中の三人は、笑いのひもに泣きのひも、それから怒りのひもにくしゃみのひもと、あちらこちらのひもをメチャクチャにひっぱりました。
Inside the belly, the three pulled various strings – the laughter string, the tears string, the anger string, and even the sneeze string – causing chaos.
もう大変な騒ぎです。
It was quite a commotion.
山ぶしとかじ屋が大笑いしていると、医者が腹の中になにか薬を塗りながらいいました。
While the mountain priest and the carpenter laughed heartily, the doctor, applying some kind of medicine inside the belly, said:
「さて、そろそろ下し薬を塗って外へ出よう。これは効くぞ」
“Now, it’s time to apply the laxative and get out of here. This will work.”
泣いたり笑ったりしていたえんま大王は、急に腹をかかえて便所にかけこみました。
Enma Daio, who had been laughing and crying, suddenly clutched his belly and rushed to the toilet.
えんま大王のおしりから、医者、山ぶし、かじ屋が次々と飛び出してきました。
From Enma Daio’s bottom, the doctor, the mountain priest, and the carpenter flew out one after another.
ニコニコ顔の三人を見た大王は、
Seeing the smiling faces of the three, the Great King said,
「よくも、わしに恥をかかせたな。お前たちは、地獄におるしかくもないわい！とっとと元の世界へもどれ！」
“You dared to mock me! You have no place in hell! Get back to the mortal world at once!”
と、三人を地上へふきとばしてしまいました。
And he threw the three back to the mortal world.
こうして、この世にまい戻った三人は、顔を見合わせて大笑い。
And so, the three who returned to this world looked at each other and burst into laughter.
それから三人は、いつまでも仲良く暮らしたという事です。
And from then on, the three lived together as good friends forever.
